Hot dip galvanizing is the process of immersing clean steel into molten zinc. The resulting reaction between the iron and zinc creates several layers of tightly bonded alloy coating, bonded to the original steel as opposed to just a surface coating. Hot dip galvanizing offers coverage both externally and internally through hollow sections. It self-repairs when damaged, sacrificing itself to protect the base metal. This sacrificial protection prevails as long as zinc remains in proximity to the area. Additional benefits include good impact and abrasion resistance, corrosion protection, and a maintenance-free lifespan of 50+ years.
Approximate lifespans of galvanized steel:
- Industrial Use > 65 years
- Suburban Use > 85 years
- Rural Use > 120 years
